Kathy's Bread & Butter Pickles

What you need

  1. 12 very freshly picked cucumbers - Sliced
  2. 8 large onions - chopped into large pieces
  3. 1 large crock
  4. salt
  5. 2 cups vinegar
  6. 2 cups sugar
  7. 1 teas ginger
  8. 1 teas turmeric
  9. 2 teas celery seed
  10. 1 tablespoon cornstarch - mix this with your sugar
  11. 2 teas mustard seed

How to make it

  1. Pour 1/2 cup salt over cucumbers and onions and mix well.
  2. Let stand 2 hours
  3. Rinse well with water and drain off
  4. Place a clean towel in the sink and let the mixture drain off on towel in sink
  5. Bring sugar and spices to a boil and boil 1 minute
  6. Add cucumbers and onions and heat thoroughly - Do not boil
  7. Pack in jars and seal while hot
