Homemade Catsup (ketchup)
This is a great little recipe if you like avoiding sugar. I keep agave syrup or stevia powder on hand so this goes together quickly and it's versatile and delicious. Adjust spices to suit your taste.
What you need
- 1 six oz. can sugar free tomato paste such as Muir Glen
- 1/4 cup white or cider vinegar
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp ground allspice
- 1/4 tsp chipotle chili powder or more to taste (optional)
- Large pinch to 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- Large pinch garlic powder
- Large pinch onion powder
- Pinch ground cinnamon
- 2/3 cup water
- 1-2 tbl agave syrup or other sweetener to taste
How to make it
- In a saucepan, combine tomato paste with half the vinegar - whisk until smooth
- Add remaining vinegar and again whisk until smooth
- Add salt and spices and whisk to combine
- Place over medium-low heat and whisk in water
- Bring just to the simmer allowing flavors to blend
- Turn off heat and stir in agave sweetener
- Taste to adjust seasonings
- Cover and let stand until ready to serve
