Frank's Zinfandel Sangria
Contributed by: Melinda
This recipe requires some prefacing. Frank's Zinfandel is the 2004
Zinfandel we made from Dry Creek Valley grapes. It has an
outstanding aroma with beautiful flavors including what I would
call honeysuckle and berry. However, it is very sweet which means
I don't care much for it, being someone who likes fairly dry
wines. It is however extremely popular with more people than I
imagined. Over the summer when we had fresh peaches I decided to
try a sangria using the wine because of it's sweetness. It's
terrific and no added sugar or sweetener is needed. Since most of
you won't have this wine, and it won't ever be repeated
(circumstances will never be the same) try a Dry Creek Zinfandel
from grapes grown in the north end of the valley. They all have
similar flavor components and many are on the 'sweeter' side.
However, you may need to add sweetener to taste. Edmeades does a
very similar wine, but I believe it's an Alexander Valley.
1 bottle Frank's Zinfandel or other Dry Creek Zinfandel
2 large fresh peaches with good texture
2 large oranges
2-4 shots of Grand Marnier or Cointreau or other orange flavored
liqueur
1 bottle Club Soda
- Peel and cut peaches into chunks (about 1/2 inch or so)
- Cut 1 orange in half and slice into thin slices crosswise
- Cut remaining orange in half and juice
- Pour wine into a large pitcher
- Add peaches, sliced orange and orange juice and stir
- Add orange liquer and stir
- Taste and if you wish to add sweetener, do so now, stirring to combine
very thoroughly
- Pour into large chilled glasses and serve or add club soda to taste
Sangria doesn't need to be blended with soda, but it does make it a
lighter, less alcoholic aperitif
