Basic Wild Rice

Wild rice is technically a type of aquatic grass seed. The directions for cooking typically call for 3-1 water to rice ratio, but I find it overcooks very easily that way. I prefer my rice to have texture, so I like something closer to 2-1. I find it doesn't require draining off any excess liquid this way, therefore you don't loose any flavor. Delicious!

What you need

  1. 1 cup wild rice, rinsed
  2. 2 1/4 cups water
  3. 1/2 tsp kosher salt

How to make it

  1. Heat water to boiling, add salt and rice, stir and return to boil
  2. Cover and simmer for 40-55 minutes, until rice is just burst and still has a bite
  3. If there is any liquid not absorbed, you can remove the cover and cook another 5 or so minutes until remaining liquid is absorbed.

Wild rice goes very well with anything from herbs and aromatics to vegetables to meats, poultry and fish.
